Researcher position in Kuopio (Modelling the properties of atmosphere) - Ilmatieteen laitos

The Atmospheric Modelling group is seeking an enthusiastic and a highly motivated PhD student to work in research related to atmospheric processes.

The work will include developing an atmospheric model, carrying out atmospheric model simulations, analyzing the model data, and evaluating the data against atmospheric observations. There is also a possibility to participate in atmospheric measurement campaigns. The workplace for the position is in Kuopio.

The Atmospheric Research Centre of Eastern Finland operates both in premises of the University of Eastern Finland at the Kuopio campus and in the Dynamicum building in Kumpula, Helsinki. The unit currently employs 25 researchers, whose research topics revolve around research of climate change and health effects of atmospheric constituents, focusing mainly on atmospheric aerosol particles. The research is carried out in close collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland.

Our expectations of the applicant


Candidates with an MSc degree or equivalent in relevant fields (e.g., meteorology, atmospheric sciences, geosciences, climate sciences) will be considered. We also expect:

- Experience in mathematical modelling and numerical programming (e.g. Python, Fortran)
- Willingness to work internationally, including meetings and research visits abroad
- Fluency in written and oral English
- Good computer and communication skills
- Ability to conduct research both independently and as part of a team

Furthermore, it will be beneficial for a successful candidate to meet the following essential criteria:

- Experience in aerosol modeling and related computational software
- Experience in handling of large datasets, e.g., good knowledge of post processing and analyzing atmospheric model data
- Good understanding of atmospheric dynamics
- Experience in high performance computing platforms
- Experience in aerosol measurements

  • Other information about the job: The position will be located in Kuopio, starting June 2024 or at the earliest convenience. The employment period will be fixed-term until 31st May 2026.
